Major Harry R. STROH and fighters 2nd and 8th US DIV INF

Monument in memory of the fighters of the 2nd and 8th US InfantryDivision who liberated the commune of Gouesnou, but also stele in tribute to Major Harry R. STROH pilot of the 378th Fighter Squadron, 362nd Fighter Group.
Harry R. Stroh, only son of Donald A Stroh, was born in Honolulu on August 31, 1920. He graduated from West Point in 1943. On his last mission, he took off from the A-27 Rennes / St-Jacques-de-la-Lande with his P-47 Thunderbolt to fly a low-level reconnaissance mission over Brest leading the Firebrick Yellow section. His plane was hit by flak and crashed there, as witnessed by 2nd Lt Wilbert A Edwards. Crushed behind enemy lines, his body was not recovered until 8th Division troops, commanded by his father General Stroh, liberated the area three weeks later. His father, who witnessed the crash without knowing it was his only son, was temporarily relieved of his command for depression during the combatsof the Hürtgen Forest .
