Bombing Saint-Jean-en-Royans

After the bombing raids on Beaufort sur Gervanne and Plan de Baix on June 28, 1944, the Luftwaffe reloaded their Junkers 88s at the Chabeuil airfield and took off at the end of the day, dropping their bombs on Saint-Jean-en-Royans at around 8pm.

As part of their flight plan, the villages of Pont-en-Royans and Saint-Nazaire-en-Royans were also bombed and strafed.

This strategy of bombing localities with little regard for civilian casualties was designed to dissuade residents from lending a helping hand to the Resistance fighters whose maquis were close by.
