Text of explanatory panel:

On Sunday July 30, 1944, the Royal Air Force bombed the Château de Trévarez rest center, the German and Japanesesubmariners relocating to Brest and Lorient.

In the week following the bombing, several actions are undertaken by the French Interior Forces

against the Germans, who in their retreat, engage in acts of reprisal causing numerous casualties among the population.

Finally, on August 5, the 86th reconnaissance squadron of the 6th American armored division entered Châteauneuf-du-Faou via the Pont du Roy road. The population. bursts with joy, swept up in a surge of gratitude to their liberators.

But the enthusiasm is short-lived!
After the American squadron had passed through, the Germans reacted by sending four motorcyclists through the crowd towards the Pont du Roy to meet an American estafette whose shuttles they had observed at the rear of the armored column.

Posted at the entrance to the bridge, the Germans fire on the Americanand seriously wound him depriving our liberators of their liaison officer.

Meanwhile, the American column, having passed the town and engaged the Germans billeted three km to the north on the Châteaulin road, retraced its steps, unaware that an enemy detachment had come to lie in ambush below the Notre-Dame des portes chapel in the bend, where a lookout overlooks the road.

Strengthened by their dominant position, the Germans attacked the last vehicles, throwing grenades and strafing them almost at point-blank range, and isolated them without difficulty thanks to a judiciously located chicane.

On the other side of the canal, the Americans who had crossed the bridge, watch helplessly as their comrades are exterminated. Twelve American soldiers pay with their lives for this combat for the liberationof Châteauneuf-du-Faou.

On the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of its liberation, on August 6, 1994, the town of Châteauneuf-du-Faou, holder of the Croix de Guerre for its action of resistance, erected this stele in memory of the American servicemen who fell on the soil of the commune, in the presence of a group of veterans, some of whom had participated, in the 1944 fighting at Clâteauneuf-du-Faou.
