Colonel King

It was in this "river village" that Colonel Charles Bowler King lost his life while accompanying German prisoners.

Colonel KING was killed in action on June 22 nd 1944, in Village de la Riviere PORTBAIL, while accompanying a patrol to bring in enemy prisoners. His devotion to duty and his resourcefulness contributed enormously to the Successful LIBERATION of the COTENTIN and CHERBOURG. He received the " LEGION OF MERIT" for exceptionally praiseworthy conduct in the performance of outstanding services, assistant Chief of Staff, G2, Seventh Corps, from April 7 th to June 22 nd 1944.
