Pearl Harbor

The attack, ordered by General Hideki Tojo, was launched by surprise on the morning of Sunday December 7 by the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service against the American Pacific Fleet in the harbor and other forces stationed in the vicinity. The attack was part of the Imperial expansion policy.
The annihilation of the main fleet of the US Navy was to enable the Empire of the Rising Sun to establish its "Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere". Imperial headquarters also wanted to respond to the economic sanctions imposed by Washington in July 1941 after the Imperial Japanese Army invaded China and French Indochina.
At the end of the attack, conducted in two air waves departing from 6 Japanese aircraft carriers and involving over 400 aircraft, American losses were heavy: 2,403 dead and 1,178 wounded.
Four ships of the line, three cruisers, three destroyers and 188 aircraft were destroyed. However, many ships were able to be refitted in the months that followed, and the three US Pacific aircraft carriers, then absent from Pearl Harbor, escaped the attack. Source: Wikipedia
