Panel text:

IN THIS SECTOR OF THE COMMUNE OF LOPÉREC, HIDDEN AMONG THE VAST WOODS OF THE NIVOT, THE RESISTANTS OF PONT-DE-BUIS-LES-QUIMERCH HAVE ESTABLISHED THEIR CAMP. A GROUP OF MAQUISARDS FROM BRASPARTS HAD ALSO TAKEN REFUGE THERE, AFTER THE GERMAN ATTACKS THEY HAD JUST SUFFERED. BUT ON THE MORNING OF AUGUST 3, 1944, A GERMAN ARMY COLUMN WITH TRUCKS AND ARMORED VEHICLES ARRIVED HERE TO ATTACK THE MAQUISARDS BY SURPRISE. THE FIREFIGHT WAS DEADLY FOR BOTH SIDES, AND 5 YOUNG LOCALS LOST THEIR LIVES. THIS MONUMENT WAS BUILT ON THE SITE OF THE BATTLE. IT WAS BUILT TO REMEMBER THESE YOUNG PEOPLE AND WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO FIGHT AGAINST THE OCCUPIER WHO HAD INVADED OUR. COUNTRY . IF YOU STOP HERE, KNOW THAT DEMOCRACY, FREEDOM AND PEACE ARE ESSENTIAL VALUES FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT. The republic has given us rights. It is democracy that has enabled us to become free men once again, and that defends human rights. Democracy is something our forefathers earned for us in the form of rights. It's a joy to live in freedom, to be able to come and go freely, to express oneself freely, to vote freely. We must realize that democracy is precious, but fragile. Henri Borlant , survivor of the death camps in Auschwitz from 1942 to 1945. Extract from his book', Merci d'avoir survécu"
