Nationaal Leiemonument

The Battle of the Lys is the most important battle fought by the Belgian army in 1940 during the 18-day campaign. Its aim was to prevent the German army from crossing the Lys, and it lasted from May 23 to 28, 1940, as the British troops abandoned the Belgian right and reembarked at Dunkirk, with no plans to save any of the Belgian troops. The fatal outcome of the battle was the Belgian surrender on May 28.
