Lieutenant Pierre Bastian and Lieutenant Jacques Lalande

To the glorious memory of Lieutenant Pierre Bastian

Born in Bazoilles-sur-Meuse (1907). Officer in the 274 BCA. Joined the secret army raised against the occupying enemy and Vichy traitors (1942) Chief of the Thônes valley maquis (5-1943).He trained over 300 volunteers, turning them into real soldiers. Adored by his men, esteemed by his leaders, surrounded by the generous friendship of the local population, he organized the camp des Glières (1-1944) where, in the midst of the occupation, the French army resumed its life, its traditions, its weapons and its fight. In the unequal struggle against Germans and militiamen he heroically led his troop (5-1944), injured, prisoner of the gestapo. Despite the worst torture. He fiercely kept silent saving his comrades and friends, the Germans shot him cowardly here on 28-4-1944.

And from Lieutenant Jacques Lalande

Born in Paris 1919. Saint-cyrien (promotion de la plus grande France) officer in 275 B.C.A. Enlisted in the secret army 1942. Corps francs instructor (1943): head of the A.S. in the Bonneville sector. He supervises numerous maquis. Mounted on the plateau des Glières (3-1944) his company supported the enemy shock, denounced after the battle, the militia murdered him by savage and vain tortures(28-4-1944) and dumped his body here.

These two heroes rest in Morette, leaving the country the glory of their struggle, and youth the example of their sublime and fruitful sacrifice.

The grave is located some fifty meters upstream from the memorial.
