Maquis Bernard campsites

Stèle commémorative du Maquis Bernard, its history on the very site of their their encampments in the Morvan woods. Text of plaque: From April to September 1944, in these Morvan woods, Haut Lieu de la Résistance en Morvan, the maquis Bernard was established and strengthened, ending up with: - 2 F.F.I battalions (1,200 men) - 1 British S.A.S parachute battalion - 1 field hospital with mobile surgical unit (93 wounded operated on) - 1 parachute drop site for personnel and equipment - 1 Franco-English cemetery Home to: colonel Roche's F.F.I departmental resistance headquarters and the first Nièvre prefect, M. Robert Jacquin, appointed by General De Gaulle. They took up arms to liberate our country from the Nazi yoke.
