Camp Lucky Strike 1944

This structure served as a police station for the 150,000 U.S. Army soldiers based in the communes of Saint-Sylvain Paluel , Vittefleur and Saint Riquier Es Plains from November 1944 to February 1946.

Cigarette camps were transit camps forAmerican soldiers, on their arrival in France or while waiting to be deported back to the United States. They were set up in the Seine-Maritime region, near the port of Le Havre, the main transit port, code-named 16th Port.

The cigarette camps take their names from the commercial brands of American cigarettes distributed at the time. This choice was dictated by a quest for security in wartime: their names provide no indication that the enemy could locate these camps, even though tens of thousands of soldiers were to stay there for varying lengths of time.
