Remember 51st Highland Division

Memorial to the soldiers of the 51st Highland Division who fought with courage and determination after the evacuation of the main British Expeditionary Force (BEF) from Dunkirk in May 1940.

The 51st Division commanded by major-general General Fortune  was part of the British Expeditionary Force at the start of the World War II. With the capture of two of its brigades in France, the division effectively ceases to exist. The 9th (Highland) Division is renumbered as the 51st Division. It takes part in the North African campaign, then the Sicilian campaign, before returning to France as part of the invasion of Northern Europe.
