LE MAQUIS NESTOR PERRET

ST-JULIEN-LA-GENESTE

STATION 2

The Maquis des Grands Bois found its final location here on August 29, 1943. In November the maquisards named it after Nestor Perret, leader of the M.U.R. in Clermont-Ferrand, tortured to death by the Gestapo.

Armament, clothing, blankets and funds for food were provided by the movement, whose Colonel "Prince" was military chief for Auvergne, and Colonel "Monique" regional intendant. Enlisted personnel arrived clandestinely at the St-Gervais-d'Auvergne and then Gouttières railway stations.

The construction of shelters, defensive works, military training and supplies occupied the end of 1943. By the onset of winter, a large sape had been completed, complete with table and benches, kitchen and sleeping areas. An 80 m-long evacuation tunnel, dug for safety, led into a thicket. The winter was particularly harsh. The workforceat the camp numbered up to 25 men.
