After the Normandy landings on June 6, the Germans held only the “big cities”.
The FFI were out in the open, holding the roads and passes. The population helps and feeds them.
A Gestapo agent informs us that, following the events of February 22 in Egalayes and Izon-la-Bruisse, “terrorists” are in Séderon and moving about “freely”.
3 Luftwaffe planes take off from Orange. The first plane dives in under heavy machine-gun fire and drops its 2 bombs. The first explodes in the river and the second destroys the abattoir. The second dropped at the foot of the tower, and behind the bell tower, without exploding. The third plane had no bombs, but containers filled with the dreaded Shrapnells (cluster bombs).
It's around 3pm on August 10, 1944, and the bombing is over. In just 10 minutes, 6 people were killed and many more wounded. The young maquisard Roger Latil did not survive his wounds, dying the following night.
