voie de la liberté bollard

Along the Avranches road south of Villedieu-les-Poêles an unidentified borne voie de la liberté. In 1944, Allied strategists decided to bomb towns located in a circle around the landing beaches to hinder the advance of German reinforcements. Saint-Lô and Vire were among them, but Villedieu was spared. The town was liberated on July 31, almost two months after the start of operations, by the American 4th US Infantry Division at the end of operation Cobra. Source Wikipedia
