Breendonk Fort

The Breendonk fort, located  in the commune of Willebroek, some twenty kilometers south of Antwerp, served as a concentration camp (Auffanglager) during the World War II. Together with the Mechelen assembly camp, they are the only two concentration camps set up by Nazis in Belgium. The camp's first commandant, Philipp Schmitt, would be the last death row inmate executed in Belgium. His successor at the head of the camp, Karl Schönwetter, would surrender to the Allies in 1944.
