Royal Winnipeg Rifles Monument COURSEULLES-SUR-MER

The Royal Winnipeg Rifles (R Wpg Rif) are a single-battalion infantry regiment of the Canadian Army Primary Reserve of the Canadian Armed Forces. Nicknamed the "Little Black Devils", it is based at Minto Barracks in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The Royal Winnipeg Rifles is part of the 38th Canadian Brigade Group within the 3rd Canadian Division. Three of the regiment's battalions served in the Second World War. The 1st Battalion served with the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division, the 2nd Battalion was a reserve unit that remained part-time in Winnipeg, and a 3rd Battalion served with the Canadian Army Occupation Force. The 1st Battalion was among the first Allied troops to set foot on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. They served throughout the Western European campaign, including the Battle of Scheldt, Operation Veritable and the final battle on the Rhine, before returning to Canada in 1945.
