One of the essential missions of the American 82nd airborne was to take the bridges spanning the river Le Merderet, west of Sainte-Mère-Église.
 Between 6 and June 9, 1944, violent battles took place there. To pay tribute to the many American paratroopers who lost their lives in this area, a statue, named "Iron Mike", was erected here.
