Martyrology Vassieux-en-Vercors

Martyrology listing the names of the 73 civilian victims of Vassieux-en-Vercors.
A plaque recalls that Vassieux-en-Vercors is one of the five communes compagnon de la Libération.

For its high acts of resistance during the Occupation, the village was awarded the Cross of Liberation by decree of General de Gaulle, dated August 4, 1945. The village thus became the fourth of five French civilian communities to be elevated to the rank of Compagnon de la Libération, with the following citation:

"Vercors village which, thanks to the patriotism of its inhabitants, sacrificed itself totally for the cause of the French Resistance in 1944. The main parachute drop center for Allied aircraft on the plateau, it has always given every assistance to the Maquis soldiers in their weapons collection operations. Severely bombed on July 14, attacked by 24 German gliders on July 21 and 22, 72 of its inhabitants were massacred and all its houses burnt down by a merciless enemy. Martyred for his faith in the resurrection of the Fatherland"
