Departure of the Pionniers du Vercors Text: On June 5, 1944, the BBC launched "Le chamois des Alpes bondit" This monument evokes the mass departure on June 9, 1944or more than 700 young people from the Romans, Bourg-de-Péage and surrounding areas for les maquis du Vercors. 120 did not return. They were in reserve in the maquis, were trained in the plains and on the orders of their leader joined the Vercors for the "mountain plan". This monument was created on the former site of the tramway station that ran between Saint Jean en Royans and Saint Eulalie en Royans, at the foot of the massif.
