On December 24, 1943, a grenade was thrown onto the dance floor of the soldiers' hostel in the rue de Brest. In retaliation, on December 26 the Germans arrested all able-bodied men aged between 15 and 40. Among the hundreds arrested, they chose 60 hostages at random. They were deported on January 22, 1944 to Buchenwald, 14 of whom managed to escape during the convoy, 32 of whom never returned.
