Gold Beach

Gold Beachis the code name for one of the five landing beaches in Normandyon June 6, 1944.
It is located between Asnelles and Ver-sur-Mer on the western coast of Calvados. Some 25,000 men landed there on D-Day, with 413 casualties (1.7% of men landed). The beach, entrusted to the British (30th Corps), was conquered without too much difficulty. It was divided into four sectors: Item, Jig, King and How but the latter was not used. The objectives were mostly met, and a German counter-attack was even repulsed at around 4:30 pm.
 At Gold and Juno, the Anglo-Canadian army's threefold objective was to take Bayeux, block the main Bayeux-Caen axis to any German tanks and link up with the Americans at Port-en-Bessin. By the evening of the 6th, the British had more or less achieved their objectives, with a bridgehead 9 km wide and as deep. Bayeux had not yet been taken, but had been deserted by the German occupiers. By late morning on June 7, it will be the first French sub-prefecture to be liberated and intact.
On June 8, Port-en-Bessin is transformed into an oil port.
Arromanches, immediately west of Gold Beach is transformed into an artificial harbor.
