German battery located at Ver sur Mer was equipped with four Russian 122 mm guns. Targeted by the Allied navy during the landings on June 6, 1944. British Sergeant Major Stanley Hollis was awarded Britain's highest distinction, the Victoria Cross, for single-handedly crossing the terrain and taking the first pillbox with a few grenades and his PM Stern. The German soldiers in the other casemates surrendered following this heroic act. Stanley Hollis
