Battle of Monte Cassino

The term Battle of Monte Cassino (the terms "Battle of Monte Cassino" or "Battle of Mount Cassino" are also used in French) actually covers a series of four World War II battles fought, around Mount Cassino, from January to May 1944, by the Allies against German forces to break through the Gustav Line in order to link up with forces landed at Anzio (about a hundred kilometers as the crow flies to the west of the mountain) and occupy Rome.
