Lommel German war cemetery
This is the largest German military cemetery in Western Europe, apart from Germany itself. Established after the World War II , the 16-hectare cemetery is home to 39,102 graves, mainly from the Second World War .
In 1946 and 1947, the American Battle Monuments Commission transferred the remains of fallen German soldiers who were temporarily buried at Henri-Chapelle , Fossé , Overrepen and Neuville-en-Condroz [ en ] to Lommel. In 1952, the cemetery was transferred to the German War Graves Commission. World War II casualties mainly died in subsequent campaigns:
Battle of Belgium (May 1940)
Battle of Aachen (October 1944)
Battle of Hürtgen Forest(September 1944-February 1945)
Battle of the Bulge (December 1944-January 1945)
Battle of Remagen Bridgehead (March 1945)
Other 38,560 casualties of the World War II, including 6,221 unidentified, there are also 542 victims of World War I buried at the cemetery. These victims were previously buried in Leopoldsburg.
