Jean-Louis Berthélémé

Plaque marking the place where Jean-Louis Berthélémé lived, born on October 20, 1920 in Châteauneuf-du-Faou. Mobilized at the start of the war, he was taken prisoner six times and notably detained at the Grossbeeren kommando from which he escaped on May 10, 1941. During the occupation he was behind the constitution of one of Brittany's first maquis at Saint-Gouazec on July 23, 1943. Thanks to his mastery of English, (he had lived in the USA before the war) he managed the evacuation of five crew members from the B-17 Boot HILL, which after being hit by DCA fire had to crash-land in a field at a place called Kérampresse.
He actively participated in the Resistance and hid somerefractory to the STO.
Denounced, he was arrestedon December 10, 1943 and then deportedto the Nordhausen camp, where he lost his life on March 4, 1945.
