This 17th-century manor house was used as a command post by the101st Airborne Division in June 1944.The Colonel Robert Sink and many other soldiers were photographed here. The walls of the property still have bullet holes.
At 02:20 on June 6, 1944, paratroopers from the 101st Airborne Division jumped into their DZ (Designated Drop Zone) D, near this small village. The mission of the 2nd Battalion of the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment was to take Saint-Côme-du-Mont. On the night of June 5 to 6 Lieutenant Colonel Ballard jumped to Drop Zone D at Angoville-au-Plain. The officer gathered 150 men and tried to take Les Droueries, where the Germans appeared to be entrenched.
A medical post was set up at Angoville-au-Plain. While the Americans were held in check at Les Droueries, German paratroopers retook Angoville-au-Plain; the town was taken and retaken several times. The Germans entered Vierville on the morning of June 7.
On June 8, Colonel Sink, commander of the 506th PIR gave the order to retake Vierville. The Americans continued their counter-attack, and overcame the German defenses at Angoville-au-Plain; in the afternoon Colonel de Sink transferred his headquarters to the town.
