Plaque Sub-Lieutenant George E. SCHMIDT

Text of the plaque: On the morning of D-Day, June 6, 1944, Second Lieutenant George E. SCHMIDT of Company E, 501EME Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101EME Airborne Division, led an attack on this farm building on the Angoville-au-Plain side with 30 men of Company E. He was supported by Second Lieutenant Walter W. Wood of Company C, 501EME Regiment, and 20 men of the elite troops of the 506EME Parachute Infantry Regiment. He was supported by Second Lieutenant Walter W. Wood of Company C, 501st Regiment, and 20 elite troops from the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment. The Germans were fiercely defending the building and surrounding fields. They intended to block the road and prevent the 501EME from reaching its strategic objective at the barquette. The regiment won the battle against the farmhouse, but Lieutenant SCHMIDT was killed in action and 4 elite soldiers were wounded. Lieutenant SCHMIDT was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for demonstrating "...exceptional courage, unbounded devotion to duty, and disregard of life and limb" throughout the assault. This American military medal is second in order of precedence and is awarded for heroism in combat. Second Lieutenant George E. SCHMIDT rests in peace at Site C, Row 4, Grave 32, Colleville-Sur-Mer American Cemetery, Normandy, France.
