Flémalle Fort

A large quadrangular fort in the fortified position of Liège, Flémalle is one of the twelve defenders of the Cité Ardente imagined by Brialmont in 1888. It surrendered on August 16, 1914, just minutes before Hollogne. With them, the PFL had definitively fallen. Rearmed in the interwar period, with a relatively deep quadrilateral, it reveals to visitors its never quite healed wounds, stigmata of the violence of enemy bombardment in 1940. Modart had chosen to establish his headquarters here, to command the defense. He was unaware of the power of the enemy air force and its terrible 500kg bombs, which changed the topography of the fort's summits forever. The air tower was not left out in terms of damage, this time from enemy guns (including 88mm cannons!) This, in a nutshell, is what the guides will show you during an interior tour lasting around 2 hours. The tour is complemented by a 3D reconstruction of the fort, complete with weapons, etc. It's a virtual visit that gives you a better idea of what these damp walls were like... The visit to the fort is now complemented by a visit to a completely redesigned museum.
