2nd French Armored Division Memorial Fleuré

Location of the 2nd DB on the outskirts of Argentan Orne at Fleuré. Departure point for Paris. As the 2nd Armored Division was relieved by the British on the 19th, and fed up with waiting, General LECLERC, who had repeatedly requested authorization to move up to Paris, decided to launch a detachment towards the capital. A squadron of light tanks and a company of infantry (around 150 men) set off in secret at midday on the 21st, as he himself was unable to override orders. With the support of General de GAULLE, who was in Laval and had just arrived from Algiers, and who knew the situation in Paris, he obtained the long-awaited order in the late afternoon of Tuesday the 22nd. And on the morning of the 23rd, his triumphal march on Paris began....
