Major Howie

Major Thomas D. Howie of the 29th US ID had called out to his men before the attack "See you in Saint-Lô!". Killed by a mortar shell his men would carry his remains to the heart of Saint-Lô on the hood of a Jeep, thus becoming the first American to enter Saint-Lô. On the orders of General Gerhardt, they laid his remains on the ruins of the Sainte-Croix church, his body covered by the flag of the flag and surrounded by flowers.
Major Howie will go down in legend as Major de Saint-Lô.
