CHRONIC OF A FORGOTTEN DEATH, AUGUST 4, 1944

In the ferme Lebrun in Penvénan the Germans detained several men caught in a roundup and sentenced to death, they also proceeded to requisition carts to transport ammunition. The farm garrison is made up of German army auxiliaries including the so-called White Russians (Vlassov army) and Georgian mercenaries.

The Russians desert and free the prisoners. Among them Louis Toulouzan, a fireman from Brest and Auguste Le Merrer, from Camlez, who did not want to abandon his horse or his cart loaded with weapons. The group of around ten men (Russians and Bretons) headed for Plouguiel, with the aim of joining the Resistance by taking back roads to escape detection.

Four Georgians who had remained loyal to the German army tracked down the fugitives, joined them at Kergoulas and machine-gunned them. Auguste Le Merrer has just enough time to tie his horse to the ring of the Café Treuveur and blend in with a group of harvesters in a nearby field. Louis Toulouzan, who has fallen behind, is unable to cross the road and is therefore obliged to take the direction of Keralio.

The four pursuers arrive at Kergoulas it's 11:30, they shoot the horse, two of them enter the café and ravage the interior. Baptiste Treuveur, the owner of the café, crawls out of his house on his hands and knees, but considers himself lucky that his assailants let him live; a third chases Louis Toulouzan, while the fourth takes up position on the embankment opposite the café.

As luck would have it, Isaac Toulouzan, Louis' brother, works in a nearby field, he hears the shots and, to his misfortune, heads for the embankment without noticing anything. Luck was not on his side, the Georgian let him pass and shot him in the back, Isaac was killed on the spot, thus ended a few days before the liberation, the life of a widowed man, father. of a child who had been a prisoner before being repatriated as a breadwinner.

As for the White Russians, they join the Bilo, pursued all the way to Penker by two of the Georgians including Isaac's killer. Isaac Toulouzan's tragic story illustrates the horror of war and its absurdity.
