Claude Chandon

Stele in memory of Colonel Claude Chandon (1894 - 1944) Compagnon de la Libération who from Guyana by way of Africa came to die for France in Carhaix on August 6, 1944.
On August 6, 1944, Colonel Chandon's jeep liaison agent with the US troops, attempted to re-enter Carhaix. Then caught under heavy automatic weapons fire, he decides to stop and surrender in order to preserve the lives of the 4 female FFL officers accompanying him, including the daughter of General Dumas. Approaching with hands raised in surrender, Colonel Claude Chandon is executed with a bullet to the head by a German officer.
