Barenton Gypsy Camp

Stele marking the location of the Gypsy camp at Barenton (50) . This camp operated from April 11, 1941 to October 8, 1942, when all were sent to the large camp at Montreuil-Bellay (49). It used two buildings of the former Barenton iron mine.

April 11, 1941 - October 8, 1942. Here, the Nazi occupier, with the complicity of the Vichy authorities had Gypsies interned.... Children, old people, women and men suffered. Let us remember, so that nothing similar happens tomorrow!
