384th Bombardment Group - 8th USAAF Memorial

This airfield was opened in 1941 and occupied by the RAF Bomber Command No. 1653 Heavy Conversion Unit RAF.

Between May 1943 and June 1945, the 384th Bombardment Group was based at this airfield and was equipped with B-17 recognizable by the triangle filled with a "P" on the rudder of their aircraft.

The primary objective of this squadron was to concentrate their attacks on French and German airfields and industries.

In particular, they took part in a raid on aircraft manufacturing plants in central Germany on January 11, 1944, this action earning them the "Distinguished Unit Citation".

They will have taken part in numerous campaigns, such as Normandy to support beachheads at landing beaches, the bombing of Saint-Lô on July 24 and 25, 1944, Eindhoven to assist paratroopers during the campaign in Holland in September 1944.
