Holdy battery

Located one kilometer from Sainte-Marie-du-Mont, the Batterie du Holdy defended Utah Beach, and close to drop zone C of the 101 st Airborne. At dawn on June 6, 1944, the drop of the 101 st Airborne men didn't go as planned, as they were dropped close to the battery, and some of the men were killed or taken prisoner by German artillerymen. According to some accounts, the cries of tortured American soldiers ripped through the night before the landing. At dawn, after fierce fighting, the soldiers of the 506th PIR commanded by Captain Lloyd E. Patch and also men from the Charly company captured the battery defended by some 50 German artillerymen. The Holdy battery now houses a gite.
