Sigolsheim National Necropolis
The nécropole nationale de Sigolsheim is a French military cemetery of the World War II located at Sigolsheim in Alsace, in the Haut-Rhin department.
The necropolis was inaugurated on May 2, 1965 by the Minister of Veterans Affairs and Mme de Lattre de Tassigny.
It was the Marshal de Lattre de Tassigny who initiated the creation of the Sigolsheim necropolis.
In the aftermath of the World War II, following the wish expressed by Marshal de Lattre and the "Association Rhin et Danube", under the presidency of General Guillaume, the Ministry of Veterans and Victims of War, proposed to group together the bodies of the soldiers of the 1st French Army in a place where the fighting had been the most deadly. Thus, the necropolis was erected on the "Blutberg " hill (Mountain of Blood) in memory of the fierce fighting of January and February 1945, during the reduction of the poche de Colmar.
The town council under the chairmanship of its mayor Thierry Speitel decided to name the access road to the necropolis: "Rue du Maréchal de Lattre de Tassigny".
