Wolfsschlucht II

The Wolfsschlucht II ("wolf's ravine" or "wolf's throat" or "wolf's precipice") or W2is a set of German bunkersfrom the World War II located at Margival in the Aisne, some ten kilometers northeast of Soissons. It is one of twenty Führer headquarters(Führerhauptquartiere or FHQ), which Adolf Hitler had built across Germany and occupied Europe. Some ten days after the Allied landings, on June 16 and 17, 1944, Hitler, accompanied by Jodl and his Staff, visits the Wolfsschlucht II for the first time, with the aim of taking stock with Field Marshals von Rundstedt and Rommel of developments on theNormandy front. Rommel almost persuaded him to visit his HQat the château de la Roche-Guyon, some 150 km west of Margival, over the next few days, hoping to give him a better appreciation of the situation on the front. But the night after Rommeland Rundstedt left, a flying bomb V1having deviated from its trajectory exploded near Wolfsschlucht II and then the area was overflown by Allied aircraft; these events convinced Hitler to return immediately.
Thereafter, Hitler did not leave Germany again until the end of the war. Field Marshal Model occupied Wolfsschlucht II for ten days in August 1944 when he took command of the Western Front, but had to evacuate it fairly quickly in the face of the Allied advance. On learning that Choltitz had not obeyed his order to burn Paris, Hitler requested, on August 26, that all V1s and V2s be launched on Paris. But it was General Speidel who received the order at Wolfsschlucht II, and did not pass it on to Field Marshal Model, who was absent that day.
