Fort de La Varde

The former fort Vauban de l'Arboulé was occupied by the Germans in 1942. Work on the bunkers continued until 1944 under the control of the9th Festung Pionier Stäb, whose delimited area stretched from Avranches to St.Brieuc. Due to its location, the LA VARDE Baustelle (construction site) requires special arrangements for the supply of materials. A metric track was laid, along with an aqueduct to carry the water needed to build the casemates.
On the site two locations are selected for the Stutzpunkt Ra 109, which falls under the Kusten VerteidiGungsbereich Gr.Rance. The first site includes the redevelopment of the former fort as a command post for the l'Abteilung, with 6 bunkers(R.112, R.502, R.506, R.600 Mod, R.622 Mod) protected by 4 tobruksplaced in the fort's bastions, one flanking the east ditch and another tobrukfor mortar or heavy machine gun near the southwest bastion.
The second extends along the west face, running around a network of trenches with 4 casemates and a tobrouk for machine gun, closing towards the point (R.120, R.611, R.622, R.653).
The structure can be visited.
