In 1940, this shelter had an observation bell and a telephone link with the fort de Barchon. At that time, rue des crètes was just a path with no buildings on it, offering the shelter's observers an unobstructed view of the Meuse.
Its role was to inform the fort for artillery fire, and to monitor access to the Voie Mélard.
Today it's buried just off the road, backfilled to the still-visible roof.
