Tournoux Fort

The fort de Tournoux is a defensive structure in the upper Ubaye valley, built between 1839 and 1866. It is located on the communal boundaries of La Condamine-Châtelard and Saint-Paul-sur-Ubaye. The hamlet of Tournoux, situated on a plateau overlooking the Ubaye and an access route to Italy via several passes, gave its name to this fortification. As the crow flies, the fortification lies some 2,000 meters south of the hamlet. In 1940, the fort was first occupied by Italian troops, then by German ones. It was liberated by Resistance fighters in August 1944. It will then be occupied by a detachment of Algerian and Moroccan riflemen.
