On January 4, 1945, not far from this spot Company 'A' of the 551st Parachute Infantry Battalionunder the command of Lt. Richard DURKEE,carried out one of the rare bayonet attacks of the World War II.
The American paratroopers neutralized a German machine-gun position and inflicted heavy casualties on the outnumbered enemy soldiers.
