John D.Gemmill and Philippe E. Higinbothan

Poullaouen was, on August 5, 1944, the first commune in Finistère liberated by the American Army(by the 6th Armored Division commanded by General Grow). Two American soldiers perish in the fighting:
★ PVC John D.Gemmill, 28, decorated with the Bronze Star for heroic deeds making his own safety in the face of intense enemy fire, He is killed handing over important documents to division units.
★ Second Lieutenant Philippe Edward Higinbothan, lies in St James Plot O Cemetery, Row 2, Grave 1.
as well as François Dupont, Émile Kermanach, Joséphine Léran and Pierre Pors, civilian victims killed by acts of war on August 4, 1944 in the market town of Poullaouen.
