Garden of the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment

In memory of the fighting, offered by the veterans of the 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment. The German counter-attack on D-Day forced General Gavin to recall reinforcements to the Fière bridge, leaving only 34 men to hold their position near the Chef-du-Pont bridge. The Germans seized the opportunity to shell the American positions, again causing casualties with their cannon on the west bank. Fortunately, a C-47 air supply parachuted in weapons and ammunition, including a mortar. Moments later, a hundred men reinforce the twenty or so remaining paratroopers. Equipped with an anti-tank gun, they were immediately deployed to destroy the German cannon. The fighting was intense. On June 9, 1944, having received reinforcements, the Americans went on the attack and took the bridge for good.
