The Royans area had been liberated for over a week. Three German soldiers who had stayed behind and were trying to rejoin their units or return to Germany were spotted after taking food from a farm. A surveillance group near Saint Thomas en Royans intercepted them and called for reinforcements.
Responding to the call for help, Gendarme André Rousset from Saint Jean en Royans was killed by a grenade, and forest ranger Marcel Perrier from the surveillance group was injured. The three Germans were captured, taken to Saint Jean en Royans, where they were mistreated and then executed by firing squad.
