Crash Wellington Aouette

This is where the Wellington BJ657 of the 425 Squadron  of the Royal Canadian Air Force crashed on December 7, 1942. Local residents found maps of Mannheim on board, suggesting that the aircraft was returning from a mission in Germany.
But what was it doing in this area? The mystery persists to this day.
It should be noted that the aircraft was empty, so the crew must have jumped beforehand.

Crew:
★ P/O Georges Cronk, pilot.
★ P/O John Rodger, navigator.
★ Sergeant John Cachia, radio.
★ P/O Ronald Hayes, Observer
★ Sergeant David Urquhart, machine gunner.
