Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp

Opened on June 14, 1940, Auschwitz is the largest concentration camp and extermination complex of the Third Reich. It is located on the territory of the localities of Oświęcim (Auschwitz in German) and Brzezinka (Birkenau in German), annexed to the Reich (province of Silesia) after the invasion of Poland. It was liberated by the Red Army on January 27, 1945.
