Flight operations at Fowlmere began in 1918 when the airfield was used by the Royal Air Force. It was designated USAAF Station 378 and assigned to the fighter command of the Eighth Air Force.Units assigned to RAF Fowlmere included the 314th and 331st Service Groups, various service squadrons, a weather squadron, a station complement squadron, engineering companies, quartermaster companies, artillery maintenance companies, a military police company, and an engineering fire-fighting platoon. The 339th Fighter Group arrived at Fowlmere from Rice AAF, California, on April 4, 1944, under the command of the 66th Fighter Wing of the VIII Fighter Command, with aircraft identified by a red white checkerboard pattern.
