During the World War II, the camp du Ruchard served as a French internment camp for nationals of enemy powers . In reality, it was mainly people who had fled fascism who were interned there, many of them Jews. While the camp contained 280 internees in September 1939, there were more than 1,400 by May 19401.
The camp was evacuated after the signing of the armistice of June 1940. A German infantry division moved in, and French and Allied prisoners, including Senegalese and North African riflemen, were interned there. It was also here that some Resistance fighters were shot. On May 16, 1942, five young Communists from the region and three Resistance fighters from other departments were executed. On October 27, 1942, seven members of the Francs-tireurs et partisans were also shot.
