Tilly-sur-Seulles Commonwealth War Cemetery

After the capture of Bayeux on June 7, the English troops advanced towards Tilly-sur-Seulles, but faced a counter-attack and German resistance. The first dead to be buried in what will become the cemetery is on July 8.
Tilly-sur-Seulles was not liberated until around June 18-19, but fighting continued until around the 26th. The Tilly-Juvigny sector changed hands 23 times. The Commonwealth Military Cemetery at Tilly-sur-Seulles contains 1222 graves, including 2 New Zealanders, 1 Canadian and 1 Australian. It also houses the bodies of 232 German soldiers.
British poet Keith Douglas is buried here. Among others, there are 135 men of the Durham Light Infantry, 80 of the Dorsetshire Regiment, 65 of the Royal Artillery, 61 of the Royal Armoured Corps.
