Mont de Huisnes German Cemetery

The Mont d'Huisnes mausoleum is the only German mausoleum in France. It is in fact a special military cemetery. It was inaugurated on September 14, 1963, and lies some hundred meters east of the commune of Huisnes-sur-Mer and a few kilometers southwest of Avranches in the vicinity of the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel. Coming from the entrance hall is a passageway to the crypts, where a marble slab reads: "Hier ruhen in einem gemeinsamen Grabe (...39 Namen4....) sowie 58 unbekannte Kriegstote des zweiten Weltkrieges darunter 20 in der Internierung verstorbene Kinder", i.e.: "Here lie in a common grave (...39 names...) as well as 58 unknown dead of the Second World War, including 20 children who died in internment".
A total of 11,956 German dead from the World War II, including women and children, were transferred there by the Volksbund exhumation service in 1961. They come from the departments of Morbihan, Ille-et-Vilaine, Mayenne, Sarthe, Loir-et-Cher, Indre-et-Loire, Vienne, Indre, as well as the Channel Islands of Guernsey, Alderney, Jersey, and Sark.
